Enabling Required Symbols in Market Watch
Before starting a multicurrency test, the symbols used by the Expert Advisor must be visible in the platform Market Watch. The Strategy Tester automatically downloads history for each symbol when it is first accessed, but it only does so for instruments that are already enabled. To ensure all necessary data is available, open the Market Watch window, right-click, select Symbols, and enable every instrument the EA will trade. This step prevents the tester from pausing to download missing data during the run, which can interrupt tick generation and skew results.
Once the symbols are enabled, the platform can fetch their historical records from the trade server. The tester then synchronizes these records with the local testing agent. If a symbol is not listed in Market Watch, the tester cannot access its price data, and the EA will fail to execute trades on that instrument. Keeping the full set of required symbols visible is therefore a prerequisite for any multi-currency backtest.

History Requirements and Automatic Downloads
The Strategy Tester retrieves price history for each symbol directly from the trading platform, not from the trade server. On the first call of a symbol, the tester downloads all available historical data; subsequent runs only fetch new bars. For timeframes at or below Daily, the agent requests at least one year of data to ensure enough bars for indicator calculations. On Weekly intervals it pulls roughly one hundred bars, equivalent to about two years, while Monthly intervals require approximately eight years of history.
If the requested number of bars cannot be obtained because the start date is too close to the beginning of available data, the tester automatically shifts the start date forward. A message to this effect appears in the testing journal. Pre-loading history by opening charts and scrolling back can reduce delays during the test and avoid unexpected shifts in the evaluation period.

Configuring Tick Generation Modes
Tick generation mode determines how price movements are simulated during the test. Every Tick is the most accurate setting, reproducing every recorded tick, but it is also the slowest. Every Tick Based on Real Ticks uses actual broker tick data without simulation, though the initial download may be large. The 1 Minute OHLC mode models only the open, high, low, and close of each minute bar, while Open Prices Only additionally models OHLC yet only uses the open price for triggering events.
Math Calculations skips price history entirely and only calls OnInit, OnTester, and OnDeinit, making it suitable for purely mathematical parameter searches. Selecting a mode affects both accuracy and execution time; the tester documentation warns that profit calculation in pips can speed up testing but disables margin control, so it should be used only for rough estimates before verifying with more accurate modes.

Multi-Currency Bar Synchronization
When testing an EA that trades several instruments, the tester generates an independent tick sequence for each symbol. A new bar may open on one instrument while another has not yet produced a new bar, mirroring real-time market conditions. In Every Tick and 1 Minute OHLC modes this is not problematic because enough intermediate ticks allow the EA to wait for synchronization. In Open Prices Only mode, however, the EA is invoked only at the bar-open tick of the main chart, so there is no guarantee that a corresponding bar has opened on secondary symbols.
To handle this, the tester documentation explains that the platform must have all required charts open before the test begins. This ensures that when a foreign symbol is first accessed, its history is transferred from the platform to the agent without stalling the simulation. Proper preparation of charts and Market Watch symbols is therefore essential for coherent multi-currency testing in all modes.

Forward Testing and Visual Verification
Forward testing divides the specified period into a back-test portion, where parameters are adapted, and a forward portion, where the same parameters are evaluated on unseen data. The user selects the forward share as one-half, one-third, one-quarter, or a custom start date; the second, latest part of the total interval is always used for forward evaluation. Results appear on a separate Forward tab, and a vertical line on the chart marks the transition point.
Visual testing runs the EA in a new window that emulates the full trading platform, complete with charts, Market Watch, and Toolbox. Each trade is plotted on the relevant symbol chart, and the user can pause, accelerate, or jump to any date. Because visual testing is unavailable when optimization is enabled and cannot use remote agents, it must be performed on a local agent. This mode is also the only way to verify indicator behavior before purchasing from the Market, since the indicator is rendered on historical data in real time.
